First Google Tango smartphone Lenovo Phab 2 Pro goes on sale

Google’s first Tango smartphone Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is not getting delayed again. The smartphone has gone on sale on the Lenovo’s US website for $499.

For those unaware, the Google Tango platform allows users to see virtual features overlaid on real-life objects through the handset’s display. Using the software, it is possible to measure objects, see how they look in real world, play with virtual pets and more. The smartphone combines the 3D-motion tracking with depth sensors to deliver an augmented reality experience.

Google claims that its Tango AR platform lets users virtually play dominoes anywhere, paint and draw on various surfaces, sling projectiles to battle enemies in games, race on personal race tracks, customise videos with 3D features and more.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro currently supports over 35 Tango-based AR apps and more are said to be in the works. Google also said that there will be more Tango-enabled handsets coming in 2017.

To make use of the Google Tango AR platform, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro sports as many as four cameras: three at the rear and one in the front. The three rear cameras at the back include one a 16MP RGB rear camera; two, a motion-tracking rear camera; and three, a depth-tracking rear camera.

At the front, there’s an 8MP camera. These cameras placed at the back panel work in tandem to bring improved augmented-reality effect on the handset display. It includes three basic sensors — motion tracking, depth perception and area learning.

Under the hood, Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based Phab 2 Pro is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor, clubbed with 4GB RAM, and 64GB of inbuilt storage, which can be expanded via a microSD card (up to 128GB).
It houses a 6.4-inch QHD resolution IPS display along with Dolby Atmos sound technology. The smartphone is also the world’s first to feature Dolby’s 5.1 audio-capture technology.

As for the battery, the Phab 2 Pro is backed by 4050mAh battery, which is rated to deliver up to 18 hours of talk time on single charge. It also supports fast-charging tech and comes in Champagne Gold and Gunmetal Gray colour variants. A fingerprint sensor is also present at the back.
