US adds China supercomputer organisations to Entity List

Chinese organisations involved in supercomputing have been added to the US Entity List of bodies forbidden from buying US technology.

The list include Sugon, the Wuxi Jiangnan Institute of Computing Technology, Higon, Chengdu Haiguang Integrated Circuit and Chengdu Haiguang Microelectronics Technology and all their alias names.

Four years ago China’s National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) was barred but then still got prohibited US parts using the proxy Hunan Guofang Kei University. Hunan Guofang and four alias addresses used by the university to allow NUDT to order US parts have been put on the Entity List.

The proscribed bodies “pose a significant risk of being or becoming involved in activities contrary to the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States,” says the US Department of w Commerce.

Out of the world’s top 500 supercomputers, China has 219 and the US has 116, but on the list of most powerful supercomputers US has the two most powerful, while China has the third one.
